Indian Religions

India is a profoundly religious country.  Religious beliefs and traditions influence the personal lives of the ordinary and the great on a daily basis.  Religious symbolism is seen everywhere. Several major religions including Hinduism, as well as, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism originated in India.  Hinduism contains the largest group of adherents at approximately 80% of the population. Islam follows with 13% of the population, and Christianity with 2 to 3%.
