By the age of ten, Saroj joined a dancing troupe. By the time she was 13, Saroj had become the choreographer’s assistant. She choreographed her first song, picturized by Nutan, ‘Nigahein Milane Ko Jee Chahta Hai’ from ‘Dil He Toh Hai’ (1963), at 14. She worked for many years in the days when a woman was not considered good enough to be a master. Working with Madhuri Dixit, and choreographing ‘Ek Do Teen’ in ‘Tezaab’, changed Saroj’s career. She has worked with the likes of Sridevi dancing to ‘Hawa Hawai’ in ‘Mr. India’ (1987), and Madhuri and Aishwarya in ‘Dola Re Dola’ from ‘Devdas’ (2002). Saroj has won three National Film Awards for Best Choreography for: ‘Dola Re Dola’, ‘Sringaram’ (2006), and ‘Jab We Met’ (2007). She was the first recipient of Filmfare’s Best Choreography Award for the song ‘Ek Do Teen” from Tazaab (1989).
