(A Match Made in Heaven) is a sweet, funny and  touching movie involving an unlikely love triangle. The story is set in Amritsar, spiritual and cultural seat of the Sikh religion, and  several scenes are played out in view of the magnificent Golden Temple.
Rab ne is told from the point of view of Surinder Sahni, a geeky, office worker. Suri is shy and unassuming, and it seems he has never had a relationship with a woman even though he is in his forties. Taani, young and vivacious, is filled with joy at the prospect of her eminent marriage, a love marriage.  The third character in this triangle is Raj, a flamboyant, slightly vulgar charmer.
As the story opens, Suri, a former student of Taani’s dad, is attending her wedding when the dreadful news comes that the groom and his family have been killed in an automobile accident.  On hearing this news, Taani’s father has a massive heart attack. Fearing Taani’s ability to survive on her own, he lives only long enough to convince Suri and Taani to marry.  So Suri returns Amsritsar with his new bride.
Unfortunately Suri doesn’t know how to communicate his feelings.  In his daydreams, he is her hero.  He is convinced that she will eventually respond to his sensitive and caring ways.   Taani knows how to be a dutiful wife: cooking, cleaning, entertaining but her heart in numb. When she joins a dance class, Suri, encouraged by his best friend Bobby, changes his appearance so he can also attend the class unnoticed.  When they are paired up, Suri decides to keep the pretense up and becomes Raj.  But what will Suri do if Taani falls in love with Raj?  Suri, it seems, for all his humbleness – is a very proud man.
There were some memorable songs in Rab ne .  “Haule Haule“ gives  expression to  Suri’s simple, sweet ideas about love. In “Dance Pe Chance”, Taani practices for a dance competition with a goofy  Raj.  But my personal favorite is “Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai”. This song captures the spiritual essence of the film.
In a world where religion is not always shown in its’ best light, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi reflects a true respect for religion in the lives of ordinary people.  “I see god in you” is a thought that is expressed several times in the film. I interpret  this to mean having qualities that transend the ordinary. For example: Taani’s protection and respect of Suri’s position with his co-workers; Suir’s compassion and sensitivity for Taani’s situation; and Raj’s overwhelming expressions of love.
Shahrukh Khan plays a perfectly adorable nerd as Suri and the loud obnoxious  Raj with ease.  Anushka Sharma, in her first role ever, is totally believable as the broken-hearted Taani . The movie is written and directed by Aditya Chopra.
