Tamasha Review

tamasha-1448607669-583-640x480Imtaz Ali’s (writer and director) “Tamasha” is all about finding your true purpose in life. Am I here just to fulfill my duty to my family or to society? Or do I have a duty to myself?  Ali follows Ved Vardhan Sahni (Ranbir Kapoor) through three important stages of his life.

Not really interested in school, 9-year old Ved  is obsessed with stories. All his free time and money is spent on an old storyteller who dispenses stories a half-and-hour at a time.  The stories, a mix of the Mahabharata and Ramayana‎, Greek mythology, and the Bible, set Ved’s imagination on fire. When he returns home, he secretly re-enacts each character.

Baaghi Review

baaghi-new-poster-out-featuring-tiger-shroff-shraddha-kapoor-1As “Baaghi”  opens, Tiger Schroff as Ronnie is balancing his whole body weight by his index finger and thumb – an incredible feat. In flashback we learn that Ronnie is an arrogant and rebellious young man. His worried father sends him to a former army buddy who is now Grandmaster Shifuji Shaurya Bharadwaj at an academy in Kerala teaching the ancient martial art form of Kalaripayattu. Kalari involves the discipline of kicking, spinning, punching and chopping for self-defense. Tiger excels here – no body doubles – and his moves are flawless. He is the Bollywood action star of the future. » Read more..

Kapoor & Sons Recommendation

kapoor-sons-heres-the-jolly-motion-poster-0001Kapoor and Sons is a family drama that leaves you feeling you have been an observer of a real family.  It is the story of accepting that family members have weaknesses, but on the other side of disappointment, our family’s love helps us cope and rise above them.   This film is not a typical Bollywood film, in that it is more of a realistic character study of a modern family. The drama is understated and the story unfolds as daily life does. In the second half of the movie old wounds and secrets appear and the groundwork laid in the first half will leave you touched emotionally by the movie.

Mardaani Recommendation

Mardaani-2

Sanam Teri Kasam Recommendation

sanam_teri_kasam_Bear

Sanam Teri Kasam is a very sweet, old-fashioned love story. By that I mean, it is less about sex and more about romance and love. Saru is quiet and plain looking. Despite seeing herself as frumpy, she is an educated and responsible person. She is the obedient daughter of a strict religious man who wants the best and most highly educated husband for her. Unfortunately, nine young men have already rejected her. Adding to Saru’s woes, her father has forbidden her younger sister, Kaveri, to marry before her.

Airlift Review

The film focuses on the evacuation of 110,000 Indians who worked there and are stranded when Hussein’s army invade. Caught in the middle of a desperate situation, the Indians were not targeted by the Iraqis who only want to kill Kuwaitis. Adding to the problem, Kuwait’s royal family flees as soon as the fighting starts, leaving behind chaos and no one in charge of the government.

2015 BollywoodPrime Does Not Recommend These Movies

2015 – BollywoodPrime Does Not Recommend These Movies

Tevar – Sonakshi Sinha and Arjun Kapoor lack chemistry and the story is poorly written. Set in Agra home of the Taj Mahal, but this is not used to add interest either.
Dolly Ki Doli – The same storyline repeated three times. Sonam Kapoor passes over true love to rip prospective groom and their parents off. Why?
Shamitabh – A first grader might come up with a plot like this. A mute man (Dhanush) wants to act, so he convinces an older washed up actor (Amitabh Bachchan) to be his voice and no one is supposed to catch on. Really.
Roy – Arjun Kapoor is a totally pretentious screenwriter and Ranbir Kapoor is a thief who is sullen and boring. Jacqueline Fernandez had some wonderful songs. Watch them on YouTube and skip the movie.
Main Aur Charles – The life of con artist/serial killer Charles Sobhraj in the 1980’s. Randeep Hooda has the worst French accent I have ever heard and the character is despicable.
Shaandaar – Were Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt given lines that were written down in this movie, or did they have a few drinks and director Vikas Bahl started filming. Yes, Shahid and Alia are adorable but this movie was a total waste of time!

BollywoodPrime One-Time Watch Movies 2015

BollywoodPrime One-Time Watch Movies – 2015

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! – Sushant Singh Rajput creates an interesting character as a novice detective with a keen analytical mind. Period setting of Calcutta during WWII is well done. Quite a mix of characters weaving in and out of the story. Unfortunately, the story loses needed tension and action by the end of the film.
Gabbar is Back – Akshay Kumar is a college professor whose wife died in a building collapse. He seeks revenge by finding the responsible official, and hanging him. Akshay’s (Gabbar) whole life becomes about avenging corruption and he teaches his students to do the same. By the end of the movie, the body count mindlessly too high.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns It is fun to watch Kangana Renault play the selfish, worldly Tanu, and the sweet, innocent but self-aware Kusum, but I was disappointed in other aspects of the story. As doctor Manu, R. Madhaven seems to have the maturity of a teenager, by getting engaged to someone whose main qualification is that she “looks” like his wife.

Drishyam Review

drishyam-movie-review Ajay Devgan is Vijay, a small town businessman caught up in a web of lies and deceit in “Drishyam” (The Sight). Although he is an orphan with only a fourth grade education, through hard work Vijay has built a successful cable business. He is obsessed with watching movie after movie, many times staying at the office late into the night. Vijay references scenes in movies for help with real-life situations; such as, advising a couple on legal matters after he recalls a movie with a similar court scene. Every day, Vijay spends time in a café owned by Martin Uncle. There he often witnesses a corrupt police officer Gaitonde (Kamlesh Sawant) bully people out of their money. » Read more..

Baahubali: The Beginning Recommendation

Director/Screenwriter S.S. Rajamouli‘s epic tale begins as a villager rescues a tiny baby from the raging waters of a spectacular waterfall. The boy is raised by a surrogate mother and is given the name Shiva. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Shiva (Telugu actor Prabhas) yearns to know what lies atop the waterfall but all his attempts to climb it fail. One day, a devoted Shiva, desiring to make his mother happy, lifts a two-ton Shiva Linga (a stone idol) from its foundation and places it in the showers of the fall, a feat which brings proud blessings to his amazed mother and the villagers. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge – Bolly Classic

Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) celebrated 1000 weeks of being continuously shown on December 12, 2014, making it the longest-running Indian film in history. DDLJ explores the world of two kinds of Indian families living as NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) in London. Raajneeti Recommendation

Raajneeti

‘Raajneeti’ is the tale of political intrigue, following the fortunes of three powerful families over a period of thirty years. ‘Raajneeti’, co-written and directed by Prakash Jha, has a formidable star cast including: Ranbi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgan, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, and Manoj Bajpayee. While Jha has stated that his only inspiration for the film was ‘The Godfather’ and the story and characters of India’s epic poem, ‘The Mahabharata’; others feel the characters closely resemble real-life Indian politicians.

Bharti Rai, daughter of a state’s Chief Minister, Ramnath Rai, is in love with opposition leader charismatic leftist Bhaskar Sanyal. After a night of passion, Bhaskar feels ashamed of his behavior. Shaken, he leaves everything behind including Bharti who is now pregnant. When the baby is born, he is taken from Bharti by her brother, Brig Gopal. Gopal places the baby in a small boat left at the edge of the water and abandons him. Gopal then persuades Bharti to marry Chandra Pratap. Chandra’s older brother Bhanu holds power in the fast-rising Rashtrawadi Party. In this way, Gopal has secured Bharti’s future and formed a strong alliance for Bharti’s father.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Recommendation

bhaag-milkha-bhaag-new-poster_13716120820
Milkha Singh is one of India’s few legendary track and field athletes. “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, brings his fascinating story to life. Based on Milkha’s autobiography, “The Race of My Life”, writer Prasoon Joshi artfully weaves flashbacks of Milkha’s tragic childhood into the story of his adult triumphs and failures.

Milkha was born sometime in the 1930’s when India was still under British rule. In his early childhood, he was a member of a large Sikh family and had a special relationship with his older sister, Ishvar. Life, as he knew it, ended when he was orphaned during the brutal Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Piku Recommendation

Piku three

It is a typical morning in the Banerjee household. Piku is running late for work, man servant Budhan is preparing breakfast and seventy year old hypochondriac Bhashkor is checking his meds and complaining of constipation. Piku tries to convince her father to “go and try”, but Bhashkor doesn’t feel “the pressure”. Piku rushes out the door and promptly takes out her frustration on the taxi driver, accusing him of being late when he has actually been waiting for 20 minutes. And so, we are introduced to the daily routine at the Banerjees in this simple slice-of-life story that deals with our motions and emotions in a most amusing way. Shoojit Sircar has touched a universal nerve as every human being is familiar with the annoyance of constipation. His slightly dysfunctional Bengali family will in some way remind you of your own.
