Boxer Adi Tomar was cheated out of winning Olympics gold for India by politics and a corrupt boxing commission. Betrayed by his coach, Dev Khatri, and a wife who left him shortly afterwards, Adi’s life is ruled by bitterness.  Now in his forties,  he is a top coach of the Indian women’s boxing team, but his temper and his abusive mouth keep him at odds with the boxing commission and his old rival, Dev, who is now its chairman.  After a confrontation about the way boxers are selected, the commission exiles Adi to Chennai, known for its lack-luster boxers and poor facilities.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Recommendation

Milkha Singh is one of India’s few legendary track and field athletes. “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, brings his fascinating story to life. Based on Milkha’s autobiography, “The Race of My Life”, writer Prasoon Joshi artfully weaves flashbacks of Milkha’s tragic childhood into the story of his adult triumphs and failures.

Milkha was born sometime in the 1930’s when India was still under British rule. In his early childhood, he was a member of a large Sikh family and had a special relationship with his older sister, Ishvar. Life, as he knew it, ended when he was orphaned during the brutal Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Kai Po Che Recommendation

‘Kai Po Che’ is told from the prospective of three childhood friends of different backgrounds and temperaments. The early 2000’s were tumultuous in Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat. In January of 2001, Ahmedabad was hit by a 7.7 earthquake. In 2002, a train carrying many Hindus returning from a pilgrimage was attacked and 58 Hindus lost their lives. Community violence broke out in the Muslim quarter of the city, leaving many more dead. These events personally affected the lives of Govind, Ishaan and Omi and their dream to leave the city for a brighter future.
